The story goes that, in bygone days, a king of the serpents with a crown-like white spot, had lived in the basement of a ruined mansion on ulica Krzywe Koło, near the old market square in Warsaw.
The Basilisk was such a ferocious beast that anyone who looked into its eyes instantly dropped dead.
Many adventurers tried to face the monster, but even the bravest knights could not withstand the sight of the serpent.
The old town was freed from the Basilisk by a simple but clever shoemaker, who bravely descended to the basements armed only with ... a mirror.
The beast looked at its awful reflection and has eventually been defeated by its own weapon.
